In addition to operating services in Kent, the SER also controlled the east/west cross country route at the foot of the North Downs linking Tonbridge, on the SER’s main line from London to Hastings, with Redhill, on the LBSCR’s Brighton line, and onwards to Guildford (LSWR) and Reading on the GWR’s west of England main line. On 19 April 1954, Maunsell U1 class 2-6-0 No 31900 built in 1931 brings a Tonbridge - Redhill train into Penshurst station in Kent. The U1 class totalled 21, with BR numbering in the series 31890-31910, the first locomotive being a rebuild of a River (K class) 2-6-4 tank (see page 83 opposite), followed by twenty new machines. The distinctive slab front above the buffer beam housed the inside cylinder, the U1s being a 3-cylinder development of the 2-cylinder U class. (Neil Davenport)
